Most XR 650 L riders do the Dave’s mod to increase the power (more fuel and more air), but the main reason I did it was to run the engine slightly cooler. Too rich is way better than too lean, as lean engine will run at a much higher temperate.

Most N/A fuel injected engines will lose power with no air intake. The cooler air being pulled in from the top of a snorkel still has to pass through several feet of tubing, with the last foot or so being heated by underhood temps.
