WebAvulsion of the optic nerve head can occur from direct or indirect force resulting in a traumatic optic neuropathy. Direct injury to the optic nerve head, from a penetrating orbital injury, is thought to be less common. Indirect injury can be from rapid torsional force to the globe resulting in shearing at the optic nerve head. WebOptic nerve avulsion (ONA) is an uncommon presentation of ocular trauma and has been infrequently reported since its first description in 1856 (Buchwald et al. 2003). The optic nerve contains more than 1 000 000 retinal ganglion axons. It exits the globe at the optic nerve head (ONH) surrounded by pial and dural sheaths.
